Consult privately with a career advisor who understands the unique needs of graduate students and postdocs. Advisors from the Office of Career & Life Design specialize in this area along with academic career navigation and management. Each college or school has career centers, some with specific advisors for graduate students. All offices collaborate to help students and scholars prepare for careers in academia, nonprofit, business, government and industry.

Topics you can discuss with an advisor at the Office of Career & Life Design include: 

  • Preparing application documents including academic application materials, cover letter, resume and CV 
  • Professional communication skills such as interviewing, negotiation and networking 
  • Managing your graduate program and working with your adviser 
  • Designing your future Exploring career options in academia, government, nonprofit, industry and business 
  • Utilizing strategies and resources for your job, internship and postdoc search

How to schedule an appointment

All currently enrolled graduate students and postdoctoral scholars and graduate alumni who completed within the last year are eligible to schedule career advising appointments with the Office of Career & Life Design. Postdocs are not eligible for appointments within colleges or schools, with the exception of the College of Natural Sciences.
