Written Communication

Written communication is highly discipline-specific, and while many disciplinary forms of writing will be developed through coursework, there are robust centralized resources at the university to support academic and non-academic writing.

Workshops & Programs

The University Writing Center (UWC)

The UWC offers workshops throughout the academic year on a variety of topics. UWC graduate writing workshops are typically one- to two-hour instructional sessions led by UWC consultants and university faculty. These workshops are often interactive, and attendees are encouraged to bring in their writing and other materials for project management. Workshops are free for all UT Austin graduate students.

Individualized Consultations

Graduate Writing Appointments

Graduate writing appointments are available with the University Writing Center (UWC) to graduate students. The UWC can assist you at any point in the writing process, from brainstorming to final revisions. They can work with academic writing, personal statements and other non-course related projects. They use a non-directive, non-evaluative approach to writing consulting.

Academic Job Market Document Consultations

The Center for Teaching and Learning offers one-on-one consultations for all academic job market documents related to teaching, including teaching statements among others, for graduate students and postdocs preparing for their future teaching careers.

Career Advising

Career Advising Consultations with Advance Degree Career Advisors are available to all graduate students and postdocs.
